Monkeypox is a type of smallpox virus and is mainly found in African countries. In May 2022, the disease was diagnosed in people in Europe who had no direct link with areas in Africa.
Monkeypox is a viral infection that originally occurred mainly in central and west Africa. Sometimes a traveler from that region comes to Europe with this disease. It is a zoonosis (a virus transmitted to humans from animals) mainly caused by rodents in Africa. Since the spring of 2022, the disease has also spread to other parts of the world, including Belgium and the Netherlands. In the current outbreak, animals do not play a role in spreading the virus, but people can infect each other. The disease is usually mild in humans. The main symptom is the rash that may look like red spots, bumps, or blisters.
